Working with Large Sets of Documents

To get accurate answers from Alexi, ask clear, structured questions and use relevant documents. This guides Alexi to deliver precise, legally relevant results, much like briefing a colleague.

Ask Clear, Specific Questions

  • Always include key legal details such as:
    • Jurisdiction (e.g., Ontario, California)
    • Parties (e.g., employer vs. employee, landlord vs. tenant)
    • Dates (e.g., contract signed in 2023, effective term ending 2025)
    • Document type (e.g., SaaS agreement, lease, employment contract)

Good vs. Vague Question Examples:

Weak / Vague Question

Strong / Clear Question

“Summarize this.”

“Summarize the key risk allocation clauses in the uploaded CommercialLease_March2024.pdf, focusing on landlord indemnity obligations.”

“Tell me about termination clauses.”

“In EmploymentAgreement_Q3.docx, explain whether the termination provisions comply with Ontario ESA standards for notice and severance.”

“Draft a clause for me.”

“Draft a confidentiality clause suitable for a SaaS agreement governed by California law, ensuring it covers subcontractors but excludes standard NDAs.”

Reference Documents

When asking about uploaded files, always specify the exact file name or describe it clearly so Alexi knows which one to analyze.

Examples:

  •  “Summarize the termination clauses in EmploymentAgreement_Q3.docx and explain whether they comply with Ontario law.”
  • “Compare the indemnity provision in Client_Lease2024.pdf against standard Canadian case law.”

Why this matters

  • Precision: Clear questions reduce ambiguity and ensure Alexi focuses on what you care about.
  • Contextual accuracy: Document references anchor Alexi’ answers in the actual text you uploaded.
  • Efficiency: Specificity minimizes back-and-forth and gets you to usable output faster.

FAQ

Do I always need to provide jurisdiction?

Not always. If your question falls under your account’s default jurisdiction, Alexi will automatically use it. You only need to specify a different jurisdiction when your question involves a different legal framework. Including jurisdiction ensures the most accurate, legally relevant answers.

What happens if I don’t name the document?

Alexi may not know which file to use if multiple documents are uploaded. Always specify the file name for accuracy.

Can I ask broad questions first, then narrow down?

Yes. A best practice is to start with an overview question, then drill down.

Example:

  1. “Summarize all key clauses in FranchiseAgreement2025.pdf.”
  2. “Now focus only on termination provisions.”
  3. “Draft a revised clause to comply with Alberta franchise law.”

Can Alexi handle multiple documents in one question?

Yes, but be explicit.

Example:
“Compare the indemnity clauses in Lease_2024.pdf and Lease_2025.pdf, and explain the key differences in landlord obligations.”

How specific is too specific?

It’s better to over-specify than under-specify. If Alexi doesn’t need some details, it will ignore them but missing details can cause vague or incomplete answers.
