What is the statute of limitations for a cause of action for breach of a written contract?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from Van Taylor v. One United Bank, B276194 (Cal. App. 2018):

A cause of action for breach of a written contract is subject to a four-year statute of limitations. (See Code Civ. Proc., 337.)5 "Under the general rule, a cause of action accrues when the wrongful act is done . . . ." (Moreno v. Sanchez (2003) 106 Cal.App.4th 1415, 1423.) However, under the discovery rule, a claim accrues when the plaintiff discovers or should have discovered all facts essential to his cause of action. (Ibid.)
