Is a patient's communications with his doctor confidential?

Prince Edward Island, Canada

The following excerpt is from Simons v. Prince Edward Island (Workers Compensation Board), 1999 CanLII 4721 (PE SCTD):

There does not appear to be any dispute that communications by a patient to his doctor are confidential. The respondent appears to have conceded this point. The case of Halls v. Mitchell, [1928] 1 S.C.R. 125, cited on behalf of the applicants, sets out the common law protection in this regard.
