The police conduct was not coercive. Nor do the surrounding circumstancesthe characteristics of the accused and the details of the interrogationshow the confession to be involuntary. (People v. Benson (1990) 52 Cal.3d 754, 779.) At the time of the interrogation, defendant was a 22-year-old high school graduate. The police officers spoke softly and respectfully to defendant. Defendant showed no signs of fear or intimidation. After confessing, defendant repeatedly thanked the officer for freeing him from his burden and placed his head on the officer's hand.
