Is there a causal connection between the breakdown of a marriage, or its breakdown, and spousal illness that adversely affects the ability to be self-sufficient?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Galloway v. Galloway, 2006 BCSC 1677 (CanLII):

There is authority for the proposition that there need not be a causal connection between the marriage, or its breakdown, and spousal illness that adversely affects the ability to be self-sufficient. Entitlement to support may still be established in such cases: see Garrod-Schuster v. Schuster, 2001 BCSC 741, at paras. 32–35, 38 and 46.
